The #NoMakeUpSelfie trend that has surged through Facebook and Twitter, resulting in over £2m being donated to Cancer Research seems to have backfired with users donating thousands to Unicef and/or enquiring to adopt a polar bear instead.
Users who accidentally sent ‘DONATE’ rather than ‘BEAT’ to 70099 donated money to Unicef instead of Cancer Research UK, while those whose phones has autocorrected ‘BEAT’ to ‘BEAR’ enquired about adopting a polar bear in a scheme organised by the World Wildlife Foundation.
Unicef apparently identified over £18,000 of mistaken donations and have been working to transfer the money to Cancer Research.
Those who texted ‘BEAR’ to 70099 would have received a text from WWF saying, “Thank you for choosing an adorable polar bear. We will call you today to set up your adoption.” The bear adoption wouldn’t have been set up until human operators had confirmed the adoption. Therefore they wouldn’t have taken any money from these accidental texts, nor will they be delivering polar bears to unwilling participants.
